Lockheed Martin Employee Receives Asian American Engineer of the Year Award

SUNNYVALE, Calif.

Dr. Chon-Yin Tsai, an engineer at Lockheed Martin Space & Strategic Missiles, Sunnyvale, Calif., has received one of 15 Asian American Engineer of the Year Awards for 2003. Presented during a special recognition dinner on Feb. 22 in Dallas, Texas by the Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA in conjunction with National Engineers Week, the honor places Dr. Tsai in a select group, ranging from university professors and a U.S. Navy ship commander to a wide range of distinguished engineers in the private sector.

Dr. Tsai is an engineering fellow in Lockheed Martin Space System's Design Engineering Department and is an expert in the field of fluid dynamics and applied computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Her pioneering work in the development and application of computational fluid dynamics techniques to Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) Underwater Missile Launch (UWL) has contributed to the fundamental understanding and solution of FBM UWL hydrodynamics issues.

Dr. Tsai has authored numerous publications and reports throughout her career, covering applied research, computer code development, and problem investigation. Dr. Tsai has a Ph.D. in Aeronautics & Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), while a three-time recipient of the Amelia Earhart Fellowship. Dr. Tsai also received an M.S. in Applied Mathematics from Brown University, and a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from National Chung-Hsing University.

Her other honors include the 1997 Women of Achievement Award in the category of Engineering & Technology for the Silicon Valley, the 1999 Technologist of the Year for Women of Color in Technology Award and, the 1990 Engineer of the Year Award in the category of Information Systems by the San Francisco Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
