MADRID, March 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has been selected as the winner of two categories at the 2016 Air Traffic Control Awards, which recognize collaboration and innovation in airspace management.

Lockheed Martin's En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM) system was named Best Enabling Technology at the awards, which took place in Madrid on March 7. Used at all 20 Air Route Traffic Control Centers in the United States, ERAM has been used to transform America's en route air traffic control automation system by predicting the path of aircrafts and helping passengers get to their destinations sooner.

Paul Engola, Lockheed Martin Vice President, Transportation and Financial Solutions, said "Our dedicated team worked diligently with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to deliver this crucial program, and I could not be more pleased that our effort has been recognized by this award."

Lockheed Martin was also part of a team selected as the winner of the Runway category for the technology behind Time Based Separation (TBS). Lockheed Martin worked alongside Eurocontrol, Heathrow Airport and NATS to deploy TBS for the first time at London's Heathrow Airport last year and has since delivered tangible benefits to the airport in strong headwind conditions which have historically caused significant arrival delays.

Mark Cooper, Lockheed Martin UK's Managing Director, Transport, received the award on the company's behalf and said, "We are approaching the first anniversary of the operational debut of TBS and, as a result of our team's expertise, the results are simply staggering. I'm delighted to receive this industry recognition on behalf of our great team."

The winners of the IHS Jane's Air Traffic Control Awards were chosen by a panel of judges from across the industry including the FAA, International Civil Aviation Organization, and the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Association.
