BETHESDA, Md.

BETHESDA, Md., Sept. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and to two CDP Climate Leadership Indices representing significant global benchmarks among leading corporations.

Lockheed Martin is among a select group of corporations named to the World Index, part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) in 2014. Earning a spot on the list is based on sustainability standards in which companies are recognized for their economic, environmental and social performance.

Lockheed Martin ranks in the top 10 percent of the 2,500 public traded companies eligible for the recognition. It is the only U.S. aerospace and defense company to earn a spot on the highly respected index. Last year, the corporation was ranked in the top 20 percent of the largest 600 North American companies in the Dow Jones Global Total Stock Market Index. It remains on the North American Index this year.

CDP, previously known as Carbon Disclosure Project, has also named Lockheed Martin as one of the top 10 percent of companies worldwide on the CDP's 2014 S&P 500 Climate Disclosure Leadership Index and on its S&P 500 Climate Performance Leadership Index. This marks the fourth consecutive year when Lockheed Martin was recognized for its exceptional performance with the top "A" rating, the longest performance leadership period in the aerospace and defense sector. Lockheed Martin also received its highest disclosure score yet, 98 out of a possible 100 points.

"We appreciate the recognition of our continued pursuit of sustainable practices through innovation, transparency and sound governance," said Leo S. Mackay, Jr., vice president of Ethics and Sustainability for Lockheed Martin. "This reflects the broad commitment of our workforce to help engineer a better tomorrow."

In 2013, Lockheed Martin announced a new set of aggressive "Go Green" goals by 2020: further reducing carbon emissions, facility energy use, waste to landfills and water usage

"Understanding and managing our energy consumption and resulting carbon emissions is a key part of our 'Go Green' strategy and demonstrates our commitment to environmental stewardship," said Carol B. Cala, Lockheed Martin vice president of Energy, Environment, Safety and Health. "We appreciate this recognition of our continuing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint."
