ARCHBALD, Pa., Feb. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry's Health & Safety Division today presented Lockheed Martin's [NYSE: LMT] Missiles and Fire Control facility in Archbald, Pa., with the Governor's Award for Safety Excellence.

The award recognizes successful employer-employee safety programs that produced tangible safety improvements in 2013. Lockheed Martin was one of 10 companies selected for the award out of 56 applicants.

"Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Facility of Archbald is a perfect example of an organization that has taken environmental health and safety goals to new levels by including all employees, plus all aspects of the business process," said Bill Keefer, manager of the Report Audit Section of Pennsylvania's Health & Safety Division.

The approximately 420 employees at the Archbald facility design and manufacture precision-guided weapon systems and nuclear systems for both military and civil customers.

As part of the application and review process, the employees demonstrated an active commitment to safety, health and wellness habits. A significant percentage of the population is involved in healthy lifestyle programs, as well as safety-related activities and committees. Since 2010, the Archbald facility has logged more than 2.5 million hours of labor without an accident that would require an employee to take a day or more off work.

"At Lockheed Martin, our employees are our greatest asset," said David Opalka, acting site lead at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control's Archbald facility. "A safe work environment, be it in the office, lab or production area, benefits the employee and enables us to provide greater productivity to our customers."

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs approximately 115,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation's net sales for 2013 were $45.4 billion.
