BETHESDA, Md., Sept. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- At an awards ceremony on Sept. 24 in Washington D.C., Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) received a 2012 Green Power Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The annual awards recognize a company's commitment and contribution to advancing the development of the voluntary green power market.
Lockheed Martin was one of only twelve organizations to receive the award. Green power is electricity that is generated from renewable resources, including wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro, with no increase in carbon dioxide emissions. Lockheed Martin is currently purchasing more than 546 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power, which meets 30 percent of our annual electricity.
"EPA is pleased to recognize Lockheed Martin with a Green Power Purchasing award for its distinguished commitment to buying green power and for taking a significant step to reduce the environmental impacts associated with its electricity use," said Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Air and Radiation. "Lockheed Martin is helping to grow our nation's renewable energy market and is a model for other organizations to follow."
"We are proud to receive this prestigious award," said Carol Cala, vice president, Energy, Environment, Safety and Health. "Purchasing green power advances our sustainability goals, and serves as a reminder that it is both a sound business decision and an important choice to address climate change."
Lockheed Martin currently ranks number 6 on EPA's National Top 50 List. Each list highlights EPA Green Power Partners that have completed the largest annual voluntary purchases through July 5, 2012. EPA updates its Top Partner Lists quarterly at http://www.epa.gov/greenpower/toplists/.
