The four-year exercise concluded with the publication of initial population statistics by the ONS, resulting from information supplied by approximately 28 million households that returned their census forms, either by hard copy or, for the first time, via the Internet. Further data will be released over the coming months.

Lockheed Martin UK used software technology that led to success in five previous international censuses, including the 2010 United States census where the company also played a key role. In addition, the company successfully completed the 2001 UK census, along with a similar project in Canada.

The census has yielded valuable information on housing and population, which the UK government needs to develop policies and to plan and run public services such as health and education. The information is also widely used by academics, businesses, voluntary organizations and the public.

Lockheed Martin UK supplied the majority of the technology to the ONS to support the data capture phase of the program and was responsible for conducting data capture operations through the use of a specialist team of sub-contractors. This included printing the census questionnaires, paper data capture and coding, internet data capture, the public interface (telephone helplines) and questionnaire tracking.

"The 2011 Census has been the biggest data collection exercise ever undertaken in Britain. It's going to be important for years to come to help people plan the services and facilities people need in their own neighborhoods," said ONS Census Director Glen Watson.

"The program has been a tremendous example of teamwork with a highly talented group of companies led by ONS and Lockheed Martin UK, who have provided a range of tools, services and facilities that withstood the incredible pressures during the intense operation period of running the census."

Lockheed Martin UK Census Program Director Graham Emmons added: "The 2011 UK census was delivered on time and on budget, maintaining our impressive reputation in delivering these types of programs.

"The fact that there have been no significant security incidents in the course of the project is not simply a matter of good luck. It is a reflection of sound planning which has been well implemented in the form of an effective through-life approach by the ONS, Lockheed Martin UK and our partners."

Lockheed Martin UK's partners in the project were: Bss (Contact centre operations);

Barron McCann (Delivery of laptop support services to managers in the field); Cable and Wireless (All aspects of WAN, telephone and Data Centre Architecture); Logica (Responsible for security and confidentiality); Polestar (Print services); Royal Mail (Postal sorting and provision of receipt information); Steria (System admin, help desk, test engineering support); UK Data Centre (All aspects of the operations of the paper data centre) and WTG (Delivery of web user interface design and web self help services).
