ROCKVILLE, Md., July 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has completed delivery of the National Source Tracking System (NSTS) to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The NRC and Agreement States require domestic materials licensees to report certain sealed sources above specified activity levels. This reporting spans the entire life cycle of each source – manufacture or import, receipt, transfer, and an end point, such as export or burial. NSTS is the first in the Integrated Source Management Portfolio of three applications to support licensing and accounting for sealed sources.

"Lockheed Martin began development on NSTS in 2005," said Bob Weisenbeck, director of NRC programs, Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Solutions – Civil. "This application is the first high-level security system built for the NRC with an eAuthentication Level 4 requirement, which requires users to have a smart card for access."

The project also includes operational and user support for the entire NSTS infrastructure hosted by Lockheed Martin that maintains a 99 percent availability requirement of the system.

This application will be integrated with the NRC's future Web Based Licensing (WBL) system that will strengthen the materials licensing process and the License Verification System (LVS) that will support verification of licensee authorized quantities. WBL and LVS are currently under development by Lockheed Martin.

Weisenbeck also said, "We're proud to be delivering this high-quality, application to the NRC to ensure the safety and security of radioactive source materials within the United States."

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 126,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation's 2010 sales from continuing operations were $45.8 billion.
