PHILADELPHIA, May 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has been selected to receive a 2011 Enterprise Award in the IT Innovator category. The company was chosen for the honor in part due to its development of the MONAX 3G wireless communications system.

The Enterprise Awards remain the Philadelphia region's most prestigious business honors for technology and life sciences companies, leaders, and entrepreneurs. An IT Innovator award is presented to a company that demonstrates success in applying or integrating new or next-generation technology in a unique or innovative application.

"As a company that prides itself as an innovator, we are extremely proud to receive this prestigious award," said Gerry Fasano, President of Lockheed Martin's Information Systems and Global Solutions-Defense product line. "Our MONAX system, a technology component that was key to our award, is a unique offering for our military and government customers. MONAX gives military users more capabilities at a lower price, leveraging off-the-shelf commercial technologies while still ensuring it meets mission requirements."

MONAX is a powerful, new communications system that combines the convenience of smartphone technology with the power and flexibility of a secure, highly portable infrastructure. MONAX gives our nation's warfighters the convenient and immediate communication capability they need to achieve mission success.

The MONAX system connects a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) smartphone to a ground or airborne MONAX XG Base Station, enabling the use of a single, convenient, touch screen device. The system is frequency flexible, connects hundreds of users to a single base station, and delivers superior range and link performance in voice, video and data transmission. The network uses a secure RF link, protected through exportable encryption for joint and coalition operations.

MONAX was recently honored with a Bronze Award in the Applied Technology category at the 2011 Edison Best New Product Awards in April. It has also been selected as a finalist in the Aerospace and Defense category for the American Technology Awards which will be announced in June.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 126,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation's 2010 sales from continuing operations were $45.8 billion.
