"Jim Comey is a terrific full-spectrum leader who has brought great value to our company. While we are disappointed by his departure, we understand his desire to join another company in a key leadership position with totally different responsibilities," said Lockheed Martin Chairman and CEO Robert J. Stevens. "We have a strong slate of qualified internal candidates to succeed Jim and will name his replacement in the near future."
Comey will remain as Senior VP and General Counsel through June 24 and will continue to serve on Lockheed Martin's executive management team through the summer to ensure a smooth transition.
Comey said his decision to leave Lockheed Martin was a difficult one. "Lockheed Martin is a remarkable company with an inspiring ethical culture, and I have been honored to be part of it for five years. Although I will miss the company, I am excited by the opportunity Bridgewater offers for a broader leadership role in a great business that is very different, except in its commitment to doing the right thing," he said.
Comey joined Lockheed Martin from the U.S. Department of Justice, where he had served as Deputy Attorney General and United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. From 1996 through 2001, he was Managing Assistant U.S. Attorney in charge of the Richmond Division of the U.S. Attorney's office for the Eastern District of Virginia. Comey has also worked in commercial litigation, having been a partner with the law firm of McGuireWoods, LLP. He is a 1982 graduate of the College of William & Mary and earned his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1985.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 136,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation reported 2009 sales of $45.2 billion.
