PALMDALE, Calif.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board recently awarded Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Palmdale, Calif., a 2009 Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) award for outstanding waste reduction efforts in 2008.

Last year, the Palmdale facility diverted 1,673 tons of waste from the landfill through recycling and reuse efforts, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2.2 million pounds of CO2 and saving $417,300 in the process.

"Much of our recent success has resulted from the commingled recycling program we implemented last winter," said Michael Haro, Environmental Manager at the Palmdale facility. "The program, which converted desk-side trash cans into commingled recycling containers, diverted over 90,000 pounds of waste from the landfill in November and December alone."

WRAP recognizes California businesses and nonprofit organizations for incorporating waste reduction, reuse and recycling efforts into daily business activities in an effort to achieve zero-waste and minimize their eco-footprint. Aeronautics in Palmdale won its first WRAP award in 2003, followed by a WRAP of the Year Award in 2004 and subsequent WRAP awards in 2005, 2006 and 2008.

In 2007, Lockheed Martin launched a comprehensive environmental program with the long-term goal of eliminating adverse impacts on the environment as a result of its operations. This includes annual carbon, waste and water use reduction goals and an aggressive 2012 target of an absolute 25 percent reduction in each of those areas.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2008 sales of $42.7 billion.
