VALLEY FORGE, Pa.

The Department of Defense Security Service has awarded Lockheed Martin the highest honor it can present to a government contractor, the 2009 James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award.

The Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Services-Defense facility at Papillion, Neb., was one of the 14 recipients of this year's award. To be considered for the prestigious honor, nominees must go through a rigorous selection process that requires extraordinary security practices on behalf of management and the facility workforce.

"This award represents our team's commitment to protect the U. S. warfighter and critical defense information," said Steve Papp, Security Manager for Lockheed Martin IS&GS-Defense. "Furthermore, it recognizes a sustained level of excellence for a team that never lets its guard down."

Cogswell Award facility nominees must have a minimum of two consecutive superior industrial security review ratings, be vetted by more than 20 government agencies, show a sustained degree of excellence and innovation in security program management, and have a longstanding record of outstanding security practices based on standards set by the National Industrial Security Program.

The Cogswell Award, established in 1966, is named in honor of the late Air Force Col. James S. Cogswell, who was the first chief of the unified office of Industrial Security.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 146,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2008 sales of $42.7 billion.
