Lockheed Martin Partners With Carnegie Mellon to Fund Innovative Research and Development Projects
PRNewswire
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.

Lockheed Martin is tapping into the creativity and imagination of Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center to accelerate the introduction of innovative technologies into new systems engineering concepts. To help jumpstart the venture, the corporation will fund $640,000 of research and development projects at Carnegie Mellon in 2009.

This work will focus on enhancing Lockheed Martin's OMEGA(R) services, a suite of enterprise planning, management, optimization and integration capabilities, with immersive technology, including Carnegie Mellon's patented Synthetic Interview tool. Synthetic Interview captures information from a database so the person accessing it appears to have a natural conversation with a video persona. Lockheed Martin will also work with the university to evolve modeling and simulation analysis using gaming technologies.

"The capabilities developed through this dynamic partnership will improve our ability to communicate complex solutions through advanced visualization tools," said Bill Graham, president of Lockheed Martin's Enterprise Integration Group. "Our collaboration with Carnegie Mellon will enhance our state-of-the-art engineering environment and help us continue to attract superb and innovative systems engineers."

"Carnegie Mellon is excited to partner with Lockheed Martin," said Don Marinelli, executive producer of the Entertainment Technology Center. "This collaboration will create new opportunities for our faculty and students, and it will uniquely impact Lockheed Martin's ability to convey their systems engineering expertise via cutting edge technology implementations."

Located in Pittsburgh, Pa., the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) was established in 1998 as a joint program between Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science and the College of Fine Arts. Among the ETC's many collaborators and sponsors are Walt Disney Imagineering, Industrial Light & Magic, Intel, Electronic Arts, Kodak, Microsoft, MTV U, the New York City Fire Department and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. For more information on the ETC, visit www.etc.cmu.edu.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 146,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2008 sales of $42.7 billion.
