Midwest Airlines Selects Lockheed Martin Team to Provide Advanced Flight Planning Programs
PRNewswire
ROCKVILLE, Md.

Lockheed Martin , along with teammate Flugwerkzeuge Aviation Software of Vienna, Austria, will supply Milwaukee-based Midwest Airlines with advanced flight planning technology designed to optimize flight routes, increase efficiency and generate cost savings.

Lockheed Martin will serve as the program management lead and systems integrator. Two key technologies developed by Flugwerkzeuge, a flight planning system known as mfs:2 and Operations User System (OPUS(TM)) for the management of Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs), will be integrated into Midwest Airlines' operations control center. Together, these tools will enable Midwest Airlines to design optimal flight paths by incorporating integrated weather, NOTAMs and navigation data.

In order to design cost optimized flight plans, the mfs:2 system utilizes variables such as upper air temperatures, wind speed, aircraft performance, airways and airspace restrictions, connection rules and cost constraints.

"We're pleased that the airline known for providing 'The best care in the air' has selected our advanced flight planning solutions, and we look forward to implementing our systems to help Midwest meet the increasing operational challenges facing airlines today," said Sandy Samuel, vice president of Aviation Solutions for Lockheed Martin.

Midwest Airlines features jet service throughout the United States. Catering to business travelers and discerning leisure travelers, the airline earned its reputation as "The best care in the air" by providing passengers with impeccable service and onboard amenities at competitive fares.

Flugwerkzeuge Aviation Software (F:WZ) provides cutting edge aviation technology and is a leading company in the area of cost saving and optimizing system solutions and data service provision. The company serves airlines in all parts of the world, from small regional carriers to major international carriers.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation reported 2007 sales of $41.9 billion.
