As a subcontractor to CHI Systems, an OSI Geospatial company, Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL) and teammates successfully demonstrated advanced team training and human-performance-improvement technologies as part of the Debriefing Distributed Simulation-Based Exercises (DDSBE) program.

Funded by the Office of Naval Research and managed by Naval Air Systems Command, Orlando, DDSBE combines ATL's expertise in revolutionary learning and training technologies with its experience integrating advanced, embedded, simulation-based training systems. The system will enable distributed teams of naval aviation personnel to train as they fight, and also let instructors recognize patterns of team performance and evaluate team proficiency.

The DDSBE team successfully demonstrated a unique, distributed, multi-team training capability involving a federation of E-2C Hawkeye and F/A-18 Hornet simulators to representatives of the Naval Sea Systems Command and Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Dahlgren, VA. While aircraft executed coordinated mission exercises, the DDSBE system automatically and semi-automatically collected and assessed data on the performance of teams of pilots and Naval Flight Officers prosecuting strike missions.

The DDSBE program uses technologies including automated, distributed, team-performance observation; automated assessment integration; and evaluation infrastructures. The technologies automatically assess, diagnose, and help debrief team performance.

"These technologies will let future teams train and operate better, faster, and less expensively when compared to today's labor-intensive, paper-and-pencil methods of team evaluation and debriefing," said Dr. Peter Bilazarian, ATL's DDSBE principal investigator.

Following its successful demonstration, the DDSBE system transitioned to NSWC's Human Performance Laboratory, Dahlgren, VA, where it will support future individual, team, and multi-team performance assessments on the engineering and training of complex systems.
