Two dozen small, advanced technology businesses met directly with Lockheed Martin engineers today to share innovations and capabilities that may benefit warfighters through current and future programs.

The companies that participated in the Lockheed Martin & Small Business Innovation Technology Day are working on Defense Department-funded programs to develop next-generation technologies under the Small Business Innovation Research program. Information exchanged during the Innovation Technology Day program could lead to partnerships or a mentor/protege relationship with Lockheed Martin to further the research and introduce the new technologies into current and future programs.

"The purpose of this event is to get needed capabilities into the hands of the warfighter faster," said Orlando Carvalho, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin's business in Moorestown. "With the open architecture systems we are developing, we can rapidly integrate new technologies affordably, providing our customers - those in uniform in harm's way - with systems that remain ahead of the threat."

The participating companies came from all corners of the country, representing 12 states. The businesses covered a wide spectrum of high technology needs in C4I systems, robotics technology-human-machine interactions, computational intelligence, network modeling and simulations, next-generation digital signal processing, logistics technologies, Field- Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), carbon nano-tubes (CNT) for next-generation devices and memories, and high-performance embedded computing.

Today's event was the third Small Business Innovation Technology Day hosted by Lockheed Martin this year. The first event, in February, focused on introducing the small businesses to Lockheed Martin engineers. In September, nine businesses participated in an event at Lockheed Martin's Technology Collaboration Center in Washington, D.C. At that event, the participating businesses were in an advanced stage of their relationship with Lockheed Martin and in their technology development. The event was designed to showcase the technology to Department of Defense officials.

The Technology Collaboration Center is equipped with the same computer program software and computing equipment used in the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard shipboard combat systems such as the Navy's Aegis Weapon System, Littoral Combat Ship and DDG-1000, and the Coast Guard's National Security Cutter. Through Lockheed Martin's success in moving these systems to open architecture, newly developed and evolving technologies can be inserted and tested directly with these combat system components at the Center.
