Lockheed Martin Offers OMEGA(TM) Systems Engineering and Integration Approach to Reduce Cost and Risk in Government Programs
Workshops at Center for Innovation Introduce Methods to Identify and Solve Customer Challenges

Lockheed Martin is offering a new framework that aims to reduce both cost and risk to customer challenges in the areas of national security, homeland defense, and military operations around the world.

The OMEGA framework, developed by Lockheed Martin Integrated Systems & Solutions (IS&S), combines systems analysis tools and processes used by specially trained engineers to efficiently react to a vast array of challenges in today's changing security environments.

"OMEGA is based on 30 years of systems engineering and integration experience," said Peggy Burns, Vice President, Engineering, for IS&S. "These tools allow us to focus not only on domain-specific, targeted solutions, but also on broad problems with varied constituencies."

At its most elemental level, OMEGA uses existing tools and processes to evaluate current systems, identify and prioritize issues, develop and implement solutions, and anticipate and prepare for future challenges.

By managing technology evolution and insertion, solutions can be effectively improved in varying environments. Experimentation, integration, and customer feedback are consistently used to validate solutions. For Lockheed Martin customers, program cost, schedule, and risk are reduced in ways that traditional systems engineering processes do not address.

In order to fully realize OMEGA advantages, integration workshops have been held to bring potential users and engineers together to gain the operational knowledge necessary to identify and solve problems. These workshops focus on tough enterprise problems and drive intense and discriminating customer interaction that leads to a variety of results. More than 30 workshops are planned in 2006.

"While we always gain a deeper understanding of customer intent for capabilities and operational concepts, the workshops also provide the opportunity for customers to gain additional insight into how Lockheed Martin solutions might approach and meet future operational and systems needs," said Jim Kohlhaas, Vice President, Net-Centric Integration, for IS&S.

Many of the workshops are conducted at Lockheed Martin's Center for Innovation, a unique, collaborative laboratory that serves as a critical new asset in the nation's global war on terrorism, homeland defense, and transformation of other government operations. The 50,000-square-foot Center, located in Suffolk, Va., provides excellent proximity and connectivity with a number of military commands, national security agencies, and other government customers.
