Lockheed Martin announced today that its Information Technology unit's Application Development and Maintenance organization has achieved the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI(SM)) Capability Maturity Model(R) Integration (CMMI) Maturity Level 5 rating for process excellence in producing and supporting software applications deployed at dozens of civil government and defense agencies.

CMMI Maturity Level 5, the top rating possible, is awarded to few organizations worldwide. The evaluation was based on the SEI's Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI(SM)) using the CMMI for Systems Engineering and Software Engineering (CMMI-SE/SW) V1.1.

To determine the rating, the SCAMPI A appraisal team evaluated the processes employed on contracts supported by Lockheed Martin Information Technology's Application Development and Maintenance operating unit. The company's team supporting the assessment was located in Richland, Wash., where the organization provides information technology services for the Department of Energy's Hanford environmental cleanup site and other government programs.

The assessment covered projects for work supporting the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy's Hanford Site, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense's Civilian Personnel Management Service, the U.S. Navy and many other federal activities.

Linda Gooden, President of Lockheed Martin Information Technology, said, "Earning the CMMI Maturity Level 5 is a very significant achievement, and I am extremely proud of our team at Hanford and other sites who contributed to this accomplishment. Their strict commitment to process excellence is testimony to the world class support we continuously strive to provide our government customers."

The Software Engineering Institute is a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense and operated by Carnegie Mellon University. The CMMI product suite was developed to integrate multiple capability maturity models into a single improvement framework for use by organizations pursuing enterprise-wide process improvement.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 135,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2004 sales of $35.5 billion.
