Lockheed Martin Chief Information Officer Joseph Cleveland yesterday was selected Information Technology "Leader in Manufacturing" at the inaugural CNBC Technology Leadership Awards gala held in San Francisco.

CNBC invited Fortune 1000 companies to nominate their head of information technology (IT) for awards that recognized IT excellence. An internal committee at CNBC reviewed the submissions, narrowed the field to the top contenders and then selected the award winners. In addition to manufacturing, Leadership Awards were presented for finance, technology and overall technology. The panel of judges who selected the award winners were Dr. James Cash, Director, The Cash Concours Group; Esther Dyson, Editor, Release 1.0; John Hagel, management consultant and author; and Dr. Shirley Jackson, President, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

"Lockheed Martin is proud its Chief Information Officer is among the first honorees of this prestigious information technology award," said Robert J. Stevens, Lockheed Martin Chairman, President and CEO. "Joe Cleveland is committed to ensuring the men and women of Lockheed Martin have the right tools and technologies to perform their missions. Additionally, under Joe's leadership, the Corporation's internal IT organization has provided proven technologies and processes that are adaptable to our customers' most pressing needs."

Cleveland oversees Lockheed Martin's internal information technology service provider, Enterprise Information Systems, which is also responsible for providing technology-based solutions to the corporation's businesses. Based in Orlando, Fla., Enterprise Information Systems operates one of the world's largest Windows NT networks, processes more than three million e-mail messages per day and manages over 100 million lines of code to maintain system reliability.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 135,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2004 sales of $35.5 billion.
