Local Lockheed Martin Employee Earns Corporation's Highest Honor

CHERRY HILL, N.J.

Lockheed Martin selected Sergio Gigli from its Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL) to receive a NOVA Award in the leadership category. The NOVA Award is the Corporation's highest recognition for individual or team achievement. Only about one-half of one percent of the Corporation's 130,000 employees worldwide receive the honor each year.

A resident of Philadelphia, PA, Gigli was cited for leadership in developing and applying a revolutionary network-centric technology called Sensemaking - a type of artificial intelligence that makes inferences about human behavior on the battlefield.

"Commanders typically know through assets like radar and human intelligence where enemy troops are located and the sorts of weapons they have," said Gigli. "What they don't know is the enemy's likely course of action. Sensemaking fills that crucial gap with inferences as to what to expect and when to expect it."

Developed over two years for the U.S. Army Research Laboratory's Warrior's Edge program, Sensemaking technology has the potential to transition into Lockheed Martin's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and Littoral Combat Ship programs. Warrior's Edge is part of the Horizontal Fusion initiative sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

"Sergio reached across multiple defense customers and Lockheed Martin to help solve a very complex technical challenge," said James P. Marsh, director Advanced Technology Laboratories. "His achievement and many months of long hours and weekends at customer sites are extraordinary examples of what we mean when we say 'We never forget who we're working for.'"

Gigli is a Lead Member of the Engineering Staff in ATL's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

The NOVA Award program recognizes individuals and teams who have made outstanding contributions to the Corporation's mission and business objectives. There are four categories of award: exceptional service, leadership, teamwork, and technical excellence. The award trophy consists of a brilliant representation of the Lockheed Martin star logo bursting forth from a hand-polished, black-marble base.

Lockheed Martin Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Robert J. Stevens will host the Tenth annual NOVA Awards Oct. 28, 2005, at the Smithsonian Institute's National Air and Space Museum, Washington, DC.

This year's NOVA Award marks the second consecutive year in which ATL received the honor and brings to eight the number of awards received by ATL employees since 1993 - an impressive achievement from an employee population of 150.

Headquartered in Bethesda, MD, Lockheed Martin employs about 130,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems, products and services.
