AWIPS is an integrated system that collects observation, sensor, and model data input from radar systems, weather satellites and other modeling systems. This meteorological data is processed into weather products and disseminated for weather forecasting, tracking and reporting. Integrated graphic displays and interactive software provide meteorologists with timely, accurate weather- related information.

In early December, the Lockheed Martin team met with government officials to discuss their mission, strategic goals, and objectives, as well as gain insight into the current AWIPS system. The team also anticipates being able to identify specific technical and functional requirements that will support a workable AWIPS solution under a mission-focused partnership with NOAA/NWS.
