Nippon Avionics Co. Ltd. (Avio) delivered its first Lockheed Martin Q-70 variant workstation to the Japan Defense Agency at a ceremony July 2, 2002 in Yokohama, Japan. This delivery of an Anti Submarine Warfare JQ-70 represents the growing partnership between Lockheed Martin and Japan.
"This partnership with Nippon Avionics represents an excellent opportunity for Lockheed Martin to provide the Q-70 capabilities to Japan's defense industry," said Michael Regan, program manager, Japanese programs.
After years of supplying military standard hardware to Japan, Lockheed Martin granted a manufacturing license to Nippon Avionics to build Japanese variants of the Q-70 in October 2000. Lockheed Martin Tactical Systems Q-70 product line and capabilities are well known within the Japan Defense Agency and the nation's defense industry. Nippon Avionics is licensed to produce a variant of the Q-70 system: the Command and Decision Console. Nippon Avionics also has the option to produce an additional system; the Advanced Display System Q-70.
Q-70 hardware and software provides the cornerstone for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and tracking (C4ISRT) systems for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Department of Defense. Internationally, the Q-70 products are used by the navies of Australia, Germany, Japan, Norway, and Spain. More than 55 Q-70 units are delivered per month from teammate DRS Laurel Technologies in Johnston, Pa. and Lockheed Martin's production facility in Clearwater, Fla.
Q-70 is the largest program of its type in the world and supports virtually every new U.S. Navy combat vessel and C4ISRT system being developed or upgraded today. The Q-70's design encompasses four key elements that result in lower total ownership costs for customers: open system architectures, commercial technology, planned technology refresh-, and cross-platform commonality.
