GAITHERSBURG, Md.

Lockheed Martin was today awarded a Phase 1 contract to prepare and coordinate planning for new security operations that will help ensure air passenger safety at the nation's 429 commercial airports.

Lockheed Martin is one of three contractor teams selected by the Transportation Security Administration for Phase 1 of the Strategic Airport Security Rollout program. Under the program's first phase, the teams will develop a master plan to coordinate and manage implementation of new security operations across airports -- work involving approximately 1,200 discrete procedures, tailored to individual airports, and affecting security for baggage handling and passenger screening. These security measures must be in place by a Congressionally-mandated deadline of November 19, 2002.

Lockheed Martin is teamed with KPMG, an industry leader in process management. "Together we will bring to bear our combined expertise in program management and process control to develop an effective plan for this critical aviation security program," said Terry Drabant, president, Lockheed Martin Mission Systems. Parsons, an industry recognized expert in aviation facility construction, is a subcontractor on the team.
