MOORESTOWN, N.J.

Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems (NE&SS) today announced that its Moorestown, NJ-based Surface Systems unit earned the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) Level 5 assessment and the Systems Engineering Capability Model (SECM) Level 3 assessment. Both assessments followed comprehensive reviews of the NE&SS- Surface Systems software engineering processes.

The SEI's Capability Maturity Model provides a measure of the professional evolution of an enterprise's software engineering processes and provides a roadmap for process improvement. SEI, based at Carnegie Mellon University, is a federally-funded research and development center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense to independently assess the capabilities of its business partners. The model is structured to five levels with Level 5 indicating the highest degree of maturity. SECM is a model that defines the systems engineering capabilities of a business.

"Earning both assessments in the same year is a significant and exciting milestone for our business," said Carl Bannar, vice president of Technical Operations at Lockheed Martin NE&SS-Surface Systems. "It validates our conviction that our processes are operating at a high level, and demonstrates to our customers that they are receiving world-class software products from us.

"These software assessments can increase customer confidence in our business and as a result, provide us a greater competitive margin," continued Bannar. "This was an intense process and qualitatively demonstrates the commitment and talent of the entire NE&SS-Surface Systems team -- especially our engineers."

NE&SS-Surface Systems is one of five major lines of business comprising the Lockheed Martin NE&SS business segment. NE&SS provides surface ship and submarine weapon systems, antisubmarine warfare and ocean surveillance systems, missile launching systems, radar and sensor systems, ship systems integration services and other advanced systems and services to customers worldwide. NE&SS is a unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation , headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. The corporation's principal business areas are aeronautics, space, systems integration and technology services.
