NASA's George C. Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) has recognized Lockheed Martin Space Operations' Integrated Technology Solutions organization with its MSFC Contractor Excellence Award for 2001. The award recognizes "leadership and commitment to achieving high standards of quality as well as a commitment to continuous improvement."
"We are delighted that our customer selected us for this prestigious award," said Celia Lang, program manager. "Mission success and total customer satisfaction are two of our overriding goals. It is particularly gratifying to receive an award that is reflective of these goals and the technical performance in our program here at the MSFC. It's a tribute to the hard work and commitment of all the employees on our program -- both Lockheed Martin and our subcontractors.
The Marshall Space Flight Center Excellence Award recognizes both large and small contractors in either product or service categories. Lockheed Martin was the winner of the large business/product category.
Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor of the Utilization and Mission Support (UMS) contract at MSFC. Subcontractors on the Lockheed Martin team include New Technologies Inc. (NTI) and bd Systems. Under the UMS contract, awarded in 1996, Lockheed Martin provides NASA with world-class command and control systems for the Chandra X-Ray Observatory and International Space Station (ISS) programs. Engineers and scientists use these ground systems in tests, simulations and ISS and Chandra mission operations. Systems developed by the Lockheed Martin team in MSFC's Payload Operations Integration Center serve about 300 remote science users at 12 external sites, including the ISS international partners, other NASA centers, universities and Telescience Centers.
The MSFC 2001 Excellence Award continues the Lockheed Martin team's tradition of high performance. In 2000, the team received group achievement awards from NASA in recognition of its outstanding support to both the Chandra and ISS programs. In addition, many employees on the team have earned individual commendations and Space Flight Awareness awards in the recent past.
Lockheed Martin Space Operations, a business unit of Lockheed Martin Technology Services headquartered in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, is a high-technology company with about 4,000 engineers, scientists and support personnel. Services include data collection, telemetry, and communication operations support for NASA; software and hardware engineering for the Space Shuttle and International Space Station; mission operations and planning; systems design, development, and integration; human life sciences research; and commercial information technology services.
