For the fourth time in five years, customers and stakeholders have ranked the Lockheed Martin Air Traffic Management's global air traffic control solutions as best in the world by selecting the company to receive the Air Traffic Control Association's (ATCA) prestigious Industry Award. The award was presented at ATCA's 46th Annual Meeting, International Technical Program and Exhibits, in Washington, D.C.

The award acknowledges Lockheed Martin Air Traffic Management's worldwide contributions in support of ATC systems. Specifically, the company was nominated by its customers and aviation stakeholders for its support of FAA's modernization programs, including the Common Automated Radar Terminal System (ARTS) and ARTS Color Displays, the Microprocessor En Route Automated Radar Tracking System (Micro-EARTS), the Host and Oceanic Computer System Replacement (HOCSR) Phase 3, and its key role in Safe Flight 21 and Capstone initiatives to advance new technologies.

Superb performance on the FAA's terminal modernization included the deployment of Common ARTS and the ARTS Color Displays for major FAA facilities. Characterizing Lockheed Martin's efforts as "remarkable achievements and deserving of this highest recognition," Peter Challan, FAA Deputy Associate Administrator for Air Traffic Services, said in his letter of recommendation that "They successfully completed development, installation, testing, and fielding of extremely complex hardware and software for ARTS Color Displays (ACD) and other terminal automation capabilities at important large Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facilities." He added that Lockheed Martin's performance is "a vivid example of the company's commitment to excellence and safety in support of the FAA and the National Airspace System," referring specifically to "their high standards," and "the constant pursuit of innovative ways to accomplish tasks ... ."

Also supporting the Lockheed Martin nomination, Garry Chandler, NATCA National ACD Representative, said, "Lockheed Martin ATM's exemplary skill and dedication in the installation and operational deployment of the ACDs is yet another example of the continued excellent performance they exhibit throughout all of their FAA Terminal ATC programs. The teamwork exhibited by Lockheed Martin ATM at all levels of the FAA was one of the most important factors in this program's success."

HOCSR Phase 3 replaces the direct access storage devices (DASD) connected to the mainframe processors. Lockheed Martin's sustained success on this program included completion of the first Early User Involvement Event at the FAA's W.J. Hughes Technical Center and, subsequently, on-time formal Government Acceptance.

Jack Neuberger, the FAA's Micro-EARTS Product Team Lead, commended Lockheed Martin for its work on the development of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) capabilities in conjunction with the FAA's Project Capstone. In his letter of recommendation, Neuberger noted that Lockheed Martin built ADS-B functionality into the FAA's Micro-EARTS in Anchorage, Alaska. "This involved a major re-write of the Micro-EARTS software and upgrade of the hardware without interruption to ATC operations," said Neuberger, adding, "The long-term impact of the LMATM work is substantial. ADS-B represents the greatest improvement in air traffic surveillance since radar ... . The potential for cost savings, safety, and efficiency improvement for the FAA and air carriers is enormous."
