The world's most advanced terminal air traffic control system is in service at the nation's busiest hub airport. Lockheed Martin Air Traffic Management announced today that its Common Automated Radar Terminal System (ARTS) is operational at the FAA's new state- of-the-art Air Traffic Control facility in Atlanta, Ga. The new Atlanta Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility went into service at 4:35 a.m., April 7, and was fully commissioned less than 72 hours later on April 10.

The new Atlanta TRACON, located in Peachtree City, Ga., will control over one million operations per year into and out of Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport and will ultimately consolidate Macon and Columbus operations into the new facility.
The Common ARTS system is a triply redundant commercial, off-the-shelf primary system with a dual-redundant emergency backup and 42 ARTS color displays. The new system has 10 times the capacity of the 30-year-old ARTS IIIA system that was used in the former Atlanta TRACON and can process input from as many as 15 radars."
The FAA is installing Common ARTS in some of the nation's busiest terminal approach control facilities to ensure the continued safe and efficient movement of approximately 14,000,000 flights annually. Common ARTS, which incorporates advanced computer-human interface techniques developed in collaboration with the FAA, is installed at 136 other facilities across the nation. Common ARTS is also being installed at the new Northern California and Potomac TRACONs and as upgrades to the systems presently in use in Minneapolis and St. Louis.
