Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control - Dallas has received a $20 million contract for 30 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles for the nation of Bahrain.

The foreign military sales (FMS) contract represents the first sale of ATACMS to Bahrain. The U.S. Congress approved the FMS sale earlier this year. Three other nations, Turkey, Greece and Korea, also field ATACMS missiles.

The U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command in Huntsville, Ala., is the contracting agency. The 30 ATACMS FMS variant missiles will be delivered by August 2002.

Bahrain has fielded the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), the platform from which ATACMS is fired, since 1992. Production of the missiles will take place at the Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control - Dallas facility in Horizon City, Texas.

ATACMS was the first tactical surface-to-surface missile ever fired in combat by the U.S. Army, when it was deployed in Operation Desert Storm. Production of the ATACMS was accelerated so that the missile could be used against high priority targets. The FMS ATACMS missile is approximately 13 feet long, two feet in diameter and has a range of more than 100 miles (165 kilometers). Each missile contains 950 M74 bomblets, which disperse over the target area and detonate upon impact.

Located in Dallas, Tex.; Orlando, Fla.; and Sunnyvale, Calif., Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control develops, manufactures and supports advanced combat, missile, rocket and space systems. The company is organized in seven program/mission areas: Strike Weapons, Air Defense, Anti-Armor, Naval Munitions, Fire Control & Sensors, Fire Support & Product Development.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin is a global enterprise principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced-technology systems, products and services. The Corporation's core businesses are systems integration, space, aeronautics, and technology services.
